MARK HOHLSTEIN is a berkshires, massachusetts artist, actor and musician. concentrations include: sculpture, painting, collage, acting, theater, tai chi, drawing, bass, flute, n.a.c. music, rafting, mask making, clown donut, singing, electronic & acoustic musics. all images copyright mark hohlstein 2009. just ask ...last update 11/9/09

Mark Hohlstein and Shane Murray met at UMass Boston art gallery in 1993. They struck up a friendship around all night drawing sessions with Shaun Mahoney in Shane's loft on Thayer Street in Boston. One night having used most of Shane's pastels, they came upon the idea of mark making with torn newspapers and flour paste glue with tiny bugs in it. Over the next three nights Shane and Mark created Adam, their first collage. They abandoned the newspapers and bug glue, working instead with elmers glue and the bright colors of torn magazines. Years later they reglued Adam with acrylic polymer emulsion and mounted him to canvas. Their colaboration was recently resumed after a seven year break. There have been many shows and sales. The last big shows were at the Amsterdam Southebys and Fishtank Gallery in Brooklyn.

the JOLLY SCUPPA experience is rafting on the
Connecticut River from Greenfield Massachusetts
to Northampton and beyond. it is a journey of 11+
miles and takes 2 to 4 days, the scup crew have
made five trips between 1982 and 2007.

MARK HOHLSTEIN MASK. mark is accepting commisions for mask making as well as offering instruction in mask construction

DONUT is an artist. he likes to draw. he dreams of one day holding hands with a real girl. Donut has performed in many places around massachusetts: mixed company, the triplex cinema, the storefront artists benefit and in a tipi at lake onota.

MARK HOHLSTEIN = SCULPTURE: bronze, welded steel, stone,
wood, gold, silver. Much of this work has been sold or given away over the years. Mark had a great dealer in Lenox, MA for a bunch of years, Ute Stebich, we made some money together. Working in plaster is Mark's ultimate plastic sculptural medium. casting bronze is a real thrill. welding is painful but very useful.

"ShopVac_Foundry" Mark Hohlstein. 1998. The way this worked. Dug a shallow bottle shaped pit, lined it with high temp. Fire brick, pit has an angled hole at the bottom. Also lined with fire brick that protects a steel pipe attached to a shopvac. The vac is blowing on what is essentially a large tobacco pipe like arrangement. A small brick pedestal is placed in the bottle. A graphite crucible is placed on that. Inside the crucible small chunks of bronze and pea coal are layered. Build a fire in the bottle with paper and small wood, when there are coals add pea coal. Carefully get the coal fire raging with the shopvac on intermittently. Takes a couple of hours to superheat the bronze. Stirring the coal. Shaking it down. Add more bronze. While this is happening burn out the wax from the molds and keep them hot in a wood fire. Pour bronze into hot molds.
